Wedding Countdown Block

This has been a personal favorite craft of mine to work on and I’m so happy I can finally share it! I made this for my best friend who got engaged to the love of her life just a few days ago. This is a great way to add a personalized touch to an engagement gift or a bridal shower gift.

This wedding countdown block features a heart made out of chalkboard paint and has a piece of chalk attached allowing the bride or groom to write in the countdown as soon as they pick a date.

Material Needed:

  • 1 Smooth block of wood 5inches x 7.5inches x 1inch
  • Twine
  • 1 Piece of chalk
  • Acrylic Paint
    • I used Craft Smart paint
  • Chalkboard Paint
    • I used Krylon Chalkboard pain
  • Clear Acrylic Sealer
    • I used Mod Podge Matte spray
  • Hot glue gun
  • 2 Paint brushes, 1 detail brush and 1 flat brush
  • Calligraphy pen (optional)

To start, sketch out an outline of the flowers and the heart leaving an opening in the middle. If you want to make sure to get every detail perfect, you can also trace on the desired image using this method.

One your image is on the wood, begin painting in each of flowers and the background. DO NOT paint in the heart yet; leave this area blank for now.

Once the paint is dried (approximately 3o minutes to 1 hour) paint on the chalkboard heart following the directions on the can to prep the chalkboard paint and let dry over night.

Next step is to add in the text “Days until “I Do”. There are a few ways to do this one. I used my calligraphy pen to write out the words. Another way is to sketch out the lettering or tracing on a font using this method lightly and then using the fine detail brush to fill in the letter with paint.

Once the paint is dry, tape on a piece of paper over the chalkboard paint heart and spray the rest of the block with the clear acrylic spray to lock in the design.

Once the block is dry, take the twine and tie one end to the piece of chalk. How glue the other end of the twine to the upper left side of the block to attach. I used about 10 inches of twine, you want to make sure there is enough that the bride-to-be or groom-to-be can use it to write in the heart.

There you have it! A great personalized gift to start off the festivities for the happy couple, I gifted this to my best friend in her engagement gift, which you can view here.
